Spanish Wine

Spanish Wine

Spain, a country producing traditional Spanish wine has, over the last few years undergone a very significant winemaking revolution with the planting of new grape varieties and the utilisation of new techniques, without losing sight of its heritage. Although Spain is a small country it has a lot in common with Australia with its extremes of climate. An arid and desert like centre while the coast is cool to the north, getting more influenced by its neighbour, Africa, moving south, although the mountains in the southern regions can be cultivated to produce cooler regions. Traditionally Spanish wine has been prized for their long periods of oak aging – the Spanish wine quality system lays down minimum standards that must be adhered to if the wines are to reach Reserva and Gran Reserva status. Reserva wines, normally are wines from better vintages that have been matured in wood for a minimum of six months and must be at least three years old before they may be sold. Gran Reserva wines are only produced in exceptionally good years, with the reds spending a minimum of two years in wood and two in the bottle. They cannot be released until their fifth year. Nowadays , however the younger Spanish winemakers are producing lighter wines with little or no barrel age. We offer an extensive range of Spanish wine from a number of regions – we hope you enjoy them.
