Valsotillo Crianza is proof, if proof were needed, that Ribera offers more intensity and weight than Rioja. Deep garnet in colour with typical Ribera notes of cassis, menthol and hung meat which continue on to a weighty, mouthfilling palate with considerable structure and complexity. A robust wine which is at its best with food. This wine comes from one of the historic bodegas of the Ribera del Duero region. The Arroyo family have been vineyard owners in the area for four hundred years and were one of the 5 founding members when the region achieved DO status in 1982. The family own 22 hectares of vineyards with vines between 40 and 80 years old with additional grapes being sourced from other growers in the Sotillo area. The vines are on south facing slopes on sand, limestone and clay soil. Fermentation is controlled in stainless steel vats to maintain the fruit qualities and then aged for 12 months in American oak barrels in a 15th century cellar. After bottling it is kept in the temperature controlled cellars until delivery.
