Chianti Classico San Felice 2008/09 has very attractive cedar and spice on the nose, with lifted, perfumed notes. Flavours of coffee and dark chocolate with a subtle dark cherry character and a long supple finish. A great wine from a forward-thinking producer and winemaker Leonardo Bellaccini. It comes from a large estate of 180 hectares in Castelnuovo Berardenga which lies next to its sister property Villa la Pagliaia. The winemaker is another Italian who believes in a non interventionist approach giving the Sangiovese chance to express itself. The secret lies in high quality grapes from great vineyards. The wines are understated but satisfying. The grapes are fermented for 8 days on the skins followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. It is then matured in large Slavonian casks for 10 - 12 months.
