No sign of oak here! Pale buttermilk yellow in colour, it has a delicate very fruity aroma. The taste of Castillo Viejo Catamayor Chardonnay 2006 is dry and smooth with touches of honey with an excellent length of flavour.

Castillo Viejo Catamayor Merlot Tannat 2005
The Tannat grape was taken to Uruguay by the Basque immigrants and thrives there. It is a tough grape with a thick skin which tends to produce a lot of tannin. Here it is mixed with the Merlot that typically produces a soft, full velvety wine. This combination produces a beautiful blend. Deep red colour with an aroma of berries and ripe plums. A taste of rich fruit with medium tannins. Beautiful rich taste with a good length on the palate. Full bodied. Reminiscent of a Pomerol or similar Bordeaux. Castillo Viejo Catamayor Merlot Tannat 2005 is best served at a warm room temperature and opened and poured well before drinking.

Castillo Viejo Catamayor Merlot 2004/5 is a wonderful intense red colour. This intensity is carried over to the aroma of ripe fruit and spices. Most pleasing on the palate with a complex taste of fruit and sweet tannins. Excellent length of flavour.

What can I say about this wine? Apart from - it is the best New World Pinot Noir I have tasted! It is a limited edition wine with only small amounts coming into the UK.
It is made from grapes from clone vines that have proved best suited to the Mt Rosa vineyard and it has been stored in selected barrels of mainly new French oak. This care and attention to detail has produced a wine with a rich and powerful nose full of black currant and dark chocolate. On the palate it continues with the dark berry fruits but adds a smooth, warm richness of texture to produce a wonderful mouth feel. It has a long, velvety and lifted finish. Well worth the money.

Mount Rosa Pinot Gris Central Otago 2008

This is beautifully produced by Dean Shaw, the Mt Rosa winemaker. It has a glorious nose, filled with warm spices and citrus. In the mouth it has a balance of peachy fruit and those warm spices with hints of biscuity yeast. A good finish that lasts well in the mouth. A great wine for drinking with far eastern foods.
