The Tannat grape was taken to Uruguay by the Basque immigrants and thrives there. It is a tough grape with a thick skin which tends to produce a lot of tannin. Here it is mixed with the Merlot that typically produces a soft, full velvety wine. This combination produces a beautiful blend. Deep red colour with an aroma of berries and ripe plums. A taste of rich fruit with medium tannins. Beautiful rich taste with a good length on the palate. Full bodied. Reminiscent of a Pomerol or similar Bordeaux. Castillo Viejo Catamayor Merlot Tannat 2009 is best served at a warm room temperature and opened and poured well before drinking - to allow it to open out.
